Happy New Year Austin TX!
And remember Don’t Bumble with the Bee, Call Bulwark.
Austin has always had an Ant problem, but every year about this time ants are on the prowl. Yes, it’s Ant Season. They are making their last few preparations before settling in for a “long winter nap.” Fire Ants, Carpenter Ants, Little Black Ants, are all bundling up for the cold. And some of these preparations may lead them right into your kitchen cupboard. And why not? What ant would try to weather an Austin winter without a little food storage? You would have to be a crazy ant!
Speaking of crazy ants, the Texas Rasberry ant is still flooding through Texas and beyond. The rasberry ant has now reached Louisiana and Mississippi. Still no report of the rasberry ant in Austin, but the expert says that he wouldn’t be surprised if they were already here.
So what makes this ant so crazy?
Well being different in the orderly ant world makes you a crazy ant. They don’t walk in straight lines. They kind of look like a nervous wreck with the way the skirt about. So this funny walk is the first hint and perhaps the main reason for the crazy ant title.. But that’s not the really crazy part…
“This is an alien species. This is in higher densities than any other insects I’ve ever seen. They number in the billions and cover everything around them.” – Dr. Jerry Cook.
IN THE BILLIONS!!!
In one small condensed lab study of these ants they found 96 queens in a the ant colony! But it gets better… or should I say worse… The rasberry ant queen produces 2 to 4 eggs per hour. So… 96 x 3 gives you 288 eggs each hour. 288 x 24 hours…
That’s not so small.
This ants are flooding the state of Texas in a very real sense. And they are causing havoc as they scurry about. They have shut down manufacturing plants, they have shorted out street lights, they have caused Fort Houston electrical problems, they have attacked sewage systems and they have damaged well water systems. “Houston, We Have a (an ant) problem!” is an understatement. And if you thought ants in Austin were before… just wait.
But then some see a lighter side to this story…
“there is one thing good about these types of ants….they EAT Fire Ants!”
I don’t know, maybe getting rid of the fire ant is a good thing, but there maybe a day when Texans miss the occasional fire ant bite over the flood of Rasberry ants.

“We just celebrated our first year here in Austin and as you can imagine, we love everything about it: the people, the weather, our exterminating company. That’s right, I said it. When we first moved in we immediately noticed that we were going to need a good pest control service (ants, rolly pollies, June bugs, etc.). Luckily for us, Bulwark knocked on our door our third day here. They advised us that we needed to set up service and quick…with them or with someone else but do it and do it quick. After consulting with family and neighbors, Bulwark came highly recommended. And boy were they right. Every time they come, they are professional, personable, and most importantly, GOOD. With three kids and two dogs, it was important to us to get the bugs in our backyard under control. And since Bulwark started coming, it’s all good. And the last two times we’ve had the pleasure of having Roger as our technician. He’s been on time, professional, and great with the kids and dogs. In addition to doing a good and thorough job of spraying, he’s given us some great tips on how to combat Texas critters. I sincerely hope we can have him assigned to us permanently. And for anyone that is looking for a pest control company, look no further. You’ve found the best. Thanks Bulwark and thanks Roger.”

“Have been a customer for 7 or 8 years at two different residences. Jeff Baker has been our technician on several occasions here and is terrific. Listens to what our specific needs/problems are, is full of excellent information and tips about the various creepy crawly things we live around, takes extra precautions treating the area around our rabbits’ dwelling, and puts my mind at ease, giving the outdoor perimeter and our indoor living space the level of treatment necessary to keep us safe from all the scorpions and centipedes here in the hill country. We have had great service from other Bulwark technicians as well, and Bulwark is always willing to get someone out here quickly for us, anytime between regular treatments…we recently completely cleared our backyard of years and years of layers of leaves and, as a result, suddenly saw scorpions and centipedes in the house…I called yesterday and Jeff came out today and did a great job!”

“Admittingly, I have been an ABC Pest & Lawn customer for as long as I can remember. My parents have used them since I was a kid growing up, and I continued to use them myself. My family and I just moved into our house a few months ago and were getting ready to transfer our pest control service from our old home to our new one. I was approached by a enthusiastic Bulwark employee named Oliver who sold me on the idea of “thinking outside of the box” and trying something new–which happens to be something that I am not used to doing. I signed up with Bulwark yesterday and first thing this morning, technician NATE BURGI was at my door (actually, he was 15 minutes early which is a plus in my book). Nate was extremely knowledgeable, professional and was very interested in assisting with my pest control needs. Nate was extremely diligent in providing a thorough and quality service for me and my family. So far, I am extremely impressed with Bulwark and I am glad that I made the decision to switch from ABC to Bulwark. Thanks Nate, Oliver, and Bulwark Exterminating. Chris F. Teravista/Round Rock.”
Want to control Black Widow Spiders? Check out this informative video on Spider Control and specifically black widows:
1- While they are one of the most deadly spiders, Black widow bites are not usually fatal. If you do feel sever reactions then call your local poison control center, or visit your local hospital.
2- Black widows get their name because they have been known to eat their mates after mating. However, this ritual is not the norm. I guess most husbands are smart enough to run away these days… and FYI male black widows are not always black, they are usually a combo of brown, white, and black with spots and/or strips.
3- Black widows are reclusive by nature. They don’t actively hunt prey. They wait for the prey to come to them. So black widow bites are not common. Usually you have to be antagonizing the black widow in order to be bitten.
4- Black widows are notorious for the red hour glass on their underside, but not all black widows carry this mark. Some only red markings on their bellies, some have red spots on top, and some have no red at all but are pure black. The Black widow does have an overall look is unique to their species, so if it looks like a black widow, red hour glass or not, then it most likely is a black widow.

Large Pest Control traps used to catch general pests and monitor pest activity end up catching deadly Snakes – Water Moccasins. This is not a common occurrence but it is a great idea. Add a little more protection to your home with simple pest control traps.
Texas residents should beware of the dangers Texas snakes pose. It is a good idea to keep wood piles, brush, and debris away from your home. Pest Control Pesticides are not effective against snakes. Ask your professionals for additional options for snake protection.
“It’s not easy being green…” Kermit the Frog had it wrong. Doing what’s right for the customers, the employees, and the world is EASY. Offering the customers an alternative solution to their pest problems is a good thing. Heck, if you have a customer that’s sensitive to A and B then find C for him, don’t just throw her under the bus. The only thing you should be throwing under the bus is the bugs. If you don’t want that customer then send them our way. So if you want green, greenier, or the greenest then you let us know and we will figure out what works best for you.
What’s that? Green Pest Control is still undefined? There are pest control companies “Green Washing” out there? Hey, don’t judge me based on what company XYZ or ABCD did or said. Try out the service for yourself. Call it green if you want, call it purple, pink, or red. What it comes down to is this, #1-Is the pest control effective? #2- Can I, the customer, rest and breathe easy? and #3… “Are you, the pest control comapny, improving the service?”.
Yes, we are doing the best we can. Yes, you can be assured that we are professionals. And Yes, we are moving forward, improving our service and “getting Greenier.”
